Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Orthotics – Allied Health Assistant for a part time 0.53 EFT (40 hours fortnight) permanent position to join the Orthotics team.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our five main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn Centre, and Kilmore District Hospital.  In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park and Coburg.

About the Role:

To provide a high quality AHA service within the acute and subacute services at Northern Health. The role will be located at Northern Health across inpatient wards, outpatient setting and community programs. The role involves working alongside Orthotists and Podiatrists. The AHA will provide quality patient care under supervision of Allied Health clinicians through the application of competent clinical treatment skills. The AHA will carry out clinical support activities which promote patient centred care, improve patient flow, and facilitate timely discharges.

The AHA will be able to work independently after a period of training, clinical supervision and orientation to fabricate custom orthotic devices and assist in fitting pre-fabricated devices to inpatients and outpatients.

The AHA will work collaboratively to contribute to the operational and clinical functioning of the Orthotics and Podiatry teams to achieve the strategic outcomes of the programs in which they service. 

The AHA has responsibility for participation in all Allied Health discipline services including ensuring competencies, credentialing and relevant professional development are completed. As a member of Northern Health Allied Health the AHA will be required to participate in supervision and supervise AHA students.

This role may be located at any of the Northern Health campuses, programs and partner organisations. The AHA may be required to take on additional duties as directed by the Associate Director of Allied Health – Podiatry and Orthotics and Clinical Leader Orthotics.

The role will require staff to be flexible with their working hours to meet the changing operational demands and will include working on weekends.  Staff will be required to travel and work across the various Northern Health campuses, programs, and partner organisations once current travel restrictions are eased. 

This position is responsible for:

  • Supporting Orthotist in their service delivery utilising evidence-based practice and service improvement activities
  • Fitting and education of pre-fabricated orthosis within fracture clinic and inpatient wards
  • Ordering and managing orthotic stock
  • Delivering orthotic services as delegated by the Clinical Lead Orthotist

  • Maintain a safe working environment for yourself, your colleagues and members of the public.
  • Maintain an understanding of individual responsibility for patient safety, quality & risk as outlined in Northern Health Clinical Governance & Patient Experience - Trusted Care.
  • Contribute to organisational quality and safety initiatives.
  • Escalate concerns regarding safety, quality & risk to appropriate staff members, if unable to rectify yourself.
  • Promote and participate in the evaluation and continuous improvement processes.
