The League Manager Big V is responsible for the operational and administrative management of Basketball Victoria's Big V League, ensuring its smooth execution in line with the League’s Rules of Operation. Based at the State Basketball Centre and reporting to the GM Leagues and Competitions, the role requires leadership across strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, competition operations, and event coordination.
The successful candidate will be the primary contact for all competition enquiries across the weekend. This is a full-time role that requires weekend availability during the season (Thursday to Monday), reverting to a standard Monday to Friday schedule in the off-season.
About Us
Basketball Victoria (BV) is the governing body for the sport of Basketball in Victoria. The broad objectives of BV are to provide for the advancement, encouragement, conduct, promotion and administration of Basketball in Victoria.
In addition to supporting our affiliated Member Associations, BV coordinates a number of participation and player, coach and official’s development programs to encourage the development of socially desirable attitudes and values towards physical fitness and skill acquisition. This includes selection and development of players, teams or sides to represent BV in interstate and state competitions; providing individuals with the opportunity to maximise their potential by competing at the highest level of Basketball possible, given their own ability.
BV works to provide greater access for individuals to participate in Basketball in the state of Victoria, by working with local, state and federal stakeholders to drive infrastructure growth. BV is a recognised leader in inclusive practice as evidenced by VicHealth granting exemplar status to advocate for increased access and equity for people with disabilities in all sports settings.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership
Provide strategic guidance to the GM of Leagues and Competitions across all Big V League operations.
Lead change management initiatives, offering expert advice and oversight throughout implementation.
Champion a leadership role within the department by coaching, mentoring, and developing staff. Responsibilities include delivering ongoing feedback, recognition, supporting goal setting, conducting performance reviews, and identifying career development opportunities.
Stakeholder Relationships
Effectively communicate with all member clubs to ensure alignment with League rules, regulations, budgets, and media commitments.
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, particularly member clubs, through regular engagement and collaboration.
Offer ongoing support to all League stakeholders, including external agencies, government departments, national and state sporting bodies, and Basketball Victoria (BV) partners.
Deliver timely, accurate, and relevant data, reports, and insights to member clubs.
Work collaboratively with other Leagues and Competitions team members to ensure the development of fair fixtures and the successful execution of League events.
Ensure member associations comply with the Big V Rules of Operation.
Provide ongoing guidance and support to member associations.
Oversee all aspects of player registration and immigration processes.
Manage the procurement and distribution of League uniforms and other requirements.
Coordinate the preparation and delivery of League packs for associations (e.g., game balls, drink bottles, signage).
Collect and record Game Day forms and voting data.
Maintain a visible BV presence by regularly attending games and providing feedback on stadium setup.
Coordinate BV Tribunal processes relating to player discipline reports.
Investigate breaches of League rules and BV By-Laws.
Support the planning and delivery of Finals series, Annual League Meeting, and other League functions.
Attend and take minutes at League meetings.
Manage the setup and maintenance of ongoing and historical statistical records for the League.
Assist with budget development in collaboration with the GM Leagues and Competitions.
Monitor and report on the Big V budget, tracking performance against expenditure.
Prepare regular operational and financial reports as required.
Communication
Advise the GM of Leagues and Competitions on policy matters and performance-related topics.
Work closely with other League Managers to advance shared organisational objectives and enhance the Big V League.
Collaborate with the Communications, Marketing & Digital department on the creation of the Big V Media Guide and to ensure timely, relevant delivery of statistics and results to the media.
Support the implementation of marketing strategies in partnership with the GM of Communications, Marketing & Digital to elevate the League's visibility and engagement.
To be successful in this role, you will have the following experience:
Essential Criteria
Tertiary qualification in sports management or a related discipline, and/or a minimum of 3 years’ experience in managing operations within an elite sporting environment.
Demonstrated ability to lead by example and remain focused, proactive, and resilient during periods of rapid change or uncertainty.
Proven capacity to positively influence and shape workplace culture, consistently embodying Basketball Victoria’s core values.
Innovative mindset with a forward-thinking approach to the sports industry and a willingness to adopt emerging technologies and processes.
Strong relationship management skills, with the ability to engage and communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including senior executives.
Highly organised, self-motivated, and adaptable, with the ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to influence, negotiate, and build consensus.
Strong commercial acumen and meticulous attention to detail.
Experience in developing and managing sporting fixtures.
Robust administrative capabilities with sound problem-solving and multitasking skills.
Proficiency in standard office software and digital tools (intermediate computer skills).
A solid technical understanding of basketball or experience within the broader Australian sports landscape.
Proven leadership experience, including the ability to effectively manage, support, and develop direct reports to achieve high-performance outcomes.

This role will be based at Wantirna South but involves travel around Victoria and includes nights and weekend work overseeing activity. Employees will be reimbursed for travel expenses.
