PRIMARY DETAIL
The Research Assistant role is to support the research in molecular neuroscience and protein biochemistry with focus in histology and tissue processing. The successful applicant should have a proven track record in providing a variety of laboratory techniques and demonstrates an excellent standard of laboratory research, data analysis, record keeping and communication skills.

Salary Package: From $83,580 - $95,029 p.a. (HEW Level 5), plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading.

Appointment Type: Full-time fixed term position for 12 months (with renewal subject to funding availability).

The Role
The Dementia Research Centre (DRC), within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences at Macquarie University, has an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to support research in molecular neuroscience and protein biochemistry.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled individual with experience in a variety of laboratory techniques, and who demonstrates high standards in laboratory research, data analysis, record keeping, and communication. The successful candidate will work directly with Senior Academics and the Dementia Research Centre as well as liaise with a range of academic, research, and administrative staff.

About You
Drawing on your experience in a research or tertiary environment, you will work with minimal supervision, demonstrate initiative, and ensure research timelines and objectives are met. Experience with histology techniques as well as protein biochemistry methods such as Western blotting, cloning, immunoprecipitation, and fractionation assays is essential.

Under the direction of senior researchers, you will:

  • Apply best practices in PC2 laboratories with knowledge of molecular biology, molecular genetics, and protein biochemistry.
  • Contribute to research outputs including peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
  • Communicate effectively and manage your time across multiple projects.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Adapt your workload in response to research priorities and deadlines.

Essential Selection Criteria:
  • At least a Bachelor (Hons) degree or above in molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or related discipline and experience.
  • Experience in histology sectioning and immunohistochemistry techniques
  • Experience in image acquisition and image analysis using a variety of microscopes
  • Experience in preparation and analysis of animal tissues using various molecular, cellular biology and protein biochemistry techniques
  • Ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent organisational skills with a demonstrated capacity to meet tight deadlines and manage time effectively.
  • Computer skills including MS Office, database management and research software (such as Prism)
