The Western Sydney Genetics Program (WSGP), SCHN provides a comprehensive and integrated medical genetics service comprising the following departments:
- Clinical Genetics
- Genetic Metabolic Diseases Service
- NSW Biochemical Genetics Service
- Sydney Genome Diagnostics (Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetics)
- NSW Newborn Screening Program
- Academic Department of Medical Genetics
area and beyond, in addition to Statewide clinical services for Huntington disease, neurofibromatosis,
connective tissue dysplasia, phenylketonuria and other inborn errors of metabolism.
Statewide laboratory services are provided for newborn screening and biochemical genetics.
The Clinical Genetics Department and Genetic Metabolic Diseases Service in conjunction with other departments of the Hospital, provide joint management clinics for patients with limb deficiencies, connective tissue disorders, neuromuscular disorders and Rett syndrome.
In addition, outreach clinical services are provided to the greater Western NSW and Hunter New England health regions. This service provides an internationally recognised metabolic and screening service to the State of NSW, and
has been instrumental in developing new and important initiatives.
The position of Staff Specialist, Genetic Metabolic Disorders Service will ensure that:
- Clinical services are focused on delivering excellent clinical care to children and their supporting families
- Research and teaching is undertaken and focused on the area of Genetic Metabolic Disorders
The position will provide appropriate care to inpatients and outpatients as part of the Genetic Metabolic Disorders Service across the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN).
The position will provide clinical support to the NSW Biochemical Genetics and Newborn Screening Services.

The preferred applicant may be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title (levels A to D) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the University Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. The academic title will be held for the duration of The Children's Hospital at Westmead appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for clinical matters.
- Eligible for Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency - AHPRA)
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Division of Paediatrics or Clinical Genetics or other relevant subspecialty) and/or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award .
- Demonstrated recent clinical experience in Genetic Metabolic Disorders including the management of children, adolescents, and/or adults with inborn errors of metabolism
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team and promoting a culture of continuous improvement
- Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement
- Availability to participate in on call roster and to respond on site (both CHW and SCH) within a reasonable time.
